Reporting by Maher Radhwan; Translation by Yusra Ahmed HOMS (Zaman Al Wasl)- The number of Syrian disabled has increased significantly in the last three years since the revolution started in March 2011, as a result of indiscriminate bombing on residential areas, or contribution in fighting against Bashar al-Assads army and its backed militias. A local statistics in Homs’s Northern countryside, revealed that 200 people have permanent disability like hemiplegia or quadriplegia, making 1 per 1000 of residents. If that rate was applied to Syria’s population, could reach to 23 thousand people approximately. Moreover, according to the statistics, number of partial disability like amputation or deformation reached to 2000 in Homs only. Dr. Abdel Hakim, a director of a field hospital mentioned that effort is made to evaluate the number of disabled all over Syria “The disabled suffer of psychological and physical problems besides guilt feeling, because of their inability to look after themselves, and the neglect they suffered by many revolutionary bodies. “The disabled need special care by their families or care-givers, as they need frequent position’s changing to avoid sores and ulceration, and changing nappies, beside special mattresses and psychological rehabilitation to accommodate with their new conditions” Dr. Abdullah al-Salim said to Zaman al-Wasl. Mohamed, who lost his eye by a bullet, said that he ought to support his family of 5 beside his paralyzed father, he could not find work since the beginning of the revolution and he received no aid for 5 months, however,lastly he received help to have cosmetic surgery and have an prosthetic eye fixed. Khalid, another disabled man who had his whole leg amputated by a shell, condemned the Interim Government and the revolution’s leaders for their neglect to disabled. He expressed his opinion of the need to afford to the Syrian disabled monthly income equal to the international ranges. Khalid told Zaman all-Wasl that he went to Turkey hoping to receive help or support from generous people to afford for a smart prosthetic leg which cost around $.85 thousand Abdel Wahab from Homs’s countryside accused the Social and Work Affairs department in the interim government of neglecting the disabled and their family, he confirmed that he contacted them via email, but they neglected his request. A doctor of medicine in Homs revealed that numbers of wounded people who need immediate and necessary surgery are frightening, most of them need treatment abroad, but unfortunately they cannot afford. https://zamanalwsl.net/en/news/7609.html
