Reporting to the Team Leader within Manufacturing Informatics the role is responsible for the contribution to research and project delivery in all areas of advanced manufacturing by designing, specifying and developing Intelligent Services such as decision-support systems and data analytics applications. The Manufacturing Informatics Theme aims at developing solutions to advanced manufacturing problems and opportunities, based on information. This entails three main areas; 1) the development of service enablers (devices and applications) that transfer information between factory environments and service platforms, in both directions; 2) the design and development of intelligent services that consume factory information to generate new knowledge and support decision-making by humans or devices; and 3) the design, development and implementation of IT infrastructures to support networks and connectivity in systematic informatics solutions. This job description focuses on the Intelligent Services area. The Role Design, specify and develop intelligent services to support informatics solutions to tackle manufacturing problems and opportunities; Undertake innovative research work focused primarily on the Manufacturing Capability Readiness Levels (MCRLs) 4-6; Support Senior Research Engineers in the development of proposals for individual research projects to meet clients needs in full; Support training and development of other researchers in the use of relevant tools and methods; Ensure that research work is undertaken to meet or exceed the customers quality expectations and within the budgets and timescales allocated to each project; Promote MTC capabilities through publications in International Journals and presentations and prestigious conferences, to Professional Bodies and Specialist Interest Groups with due consideration of confidentiality requirements associated with particular areas of research/projects; Provide advice and trouble shooting support to all MTC and seconded staff working in the theme. Provide marketing material and support the marketing of MTCs capabilities as directed by the Team Leader (Manufacturing Informatics), Group Technology Manager (Metrology & NDT, Informatics and Simulation & Modelling) and MTC Senior Management Team. Collaborate with co-workers across the Research Partners and Industry Members; Identify and pursue new opportunities for exploitation of research; Follow best practice, in particular in the area of health, safety and environment. The Person Candidates must have an outstanding educational profile up to and including first degree and/or Masters relevant to Manufacturing Informatics including Informatics, Software Development, Computer Science, Mathematics or Information Technology / Science. Of benefit would be Chartered Engineer status or membership of a relevant professional institution. Your background should be within Engineering, Science or IT, with particular expertise in development of ICT and software solutions, including work in or in collaboration with industry. Recent work experience in an academic or industrial manufacturing R&D environment is required as is experience of having produced and reviewed technical reports on engineering, IT or science topics and excellent computer and programming skills, operating systems, software development ability Experience or demonstrable knowledge of manufacturing production systems, solutions and methods based on mathematics, data analytics, artificial intelligence and formal reasoning remains essential.
