Repost: Ondine’s Curse "You swore faithfulness to me with every waking breath, and I accepted your oath. So be it. As long as you are awake, you shall have your breath, but should you ever fall asleep, then that breath will be taken from you and you will die!"-Ondine. A Tale of Unfaithfulness “He who loves and abandons May God give him penance The prowl of the serpent And the beetle’s walk”- Lament of a Lady Abandoned by her Lover It was the near end of one of those spring days When the crescent moon is half-lost in the haze Of a dying sun pulsing with night Giving each star a new breath of light. I was riding my horse in a new-born green forest With a tired body dreaming of rest When all of a sudden I saw a black pond With a rippling surface leafy and awned And I stopped with a shudder full of portent My ears brim full with the water’s lament. I stepped down the saddle and approached the lake With a trembling heart and a shivering blade And I saw her: Ondine, all covered in blue Her eyes filled with tears it seemed, bitter dew. She was singing a song otherworldish and deep And on my skin and my soul snakes started to creep. “I gave you my heart and my immortal life… I bore your child and became your wife… You promised to love me with all living breath I bartered my soul in exchange for death. But as years fled like the wings of the dove You forgot all your vows and perjured my love. You wooed and betrayed and I started to die. I bartered my soul in exchange for a lie. In motherly waters I can no longer return For they cannot bear the jilt and the spurn The waves are clear and truthful and light They cannot withstand the burden of slight… As my eyes fill with night I return thee your keep: May your breath turn to water should you fall asleep…” I closed my eyes and breathed deep the late hour And my lungs caught the scent of a lotus flower… This vision belongs to the days of my youth I’m an old man now but be told the truth: I still cherish and dote on my own true love Even if time has passed like the wings of the dove.
