Repost: Welcoming mongrels to HDB flats - this headline really put a smile on our face as it took us more than 10 long years of proposals to the HDB and AVA before reaching this milestone. Project ADORE kicked off quietly in April 2012 as a pilot project. We started cautiously as a lot of people were resistant to the idea. We only had our first Project ADORE adoption in July 2012 but the momentum soon picked up and to date, we have 52 adoptions and looking to do many more this year! Adopters who have adopted dogs under Project ADORE have only praise for the scheme and the dogs which they have adopted. Jolanda Ho, who is featured in this article with her dog Bobby, has this to say: Since my previous dog passed away a year ago, it took me awhile before I decided I was ready to get another one. I have always preferred bigger dogs, but I was restricted due to HDB requirements. However, thanks to Project ADORE, I was able to adopt Bobby, a stray who was a victim of a hit-and-run. From his timid and wary nature I could see that he had a very traumatic past, and I was glad I could give him a second chance. We had a fair share of problems during the 1-week home stay. Bobby had a mild separation anxiety, and in our absence, he would chew pillows, slippers, shoes, papers and essentially everything he could get his teeth on. Coming back to find out something had been ripped apart became a daily affair. Most families would probably have given him up (considering the destruction he wrought on our home), but we decided that it wasnt a good enough reason to exchange him. After all, its a life were dealing with and not a some inanimate commodity. Through his mandatory obedience classes, and tons of patience, we managed to gain Bobbys confidence and trust. Knowing that our absence from home is only temporary helped to ease his anxiety. Moreover, he is a fast learner, which makes training him a breeze. It took me just a night to teach him the BANG! command. Throughout this entire process, theres not one bit of regret in adopting him. My gratitude goes out to ASD, and Project ADORE, for allowing us to give Bobby a place he can finally call home.
