What fabulous words for those who have nothing better than to trash those who are welfare recipients: Its so convenient to take the view that the poor are poor because they choose to be, the unemployed are unemployed because they dont want to work, and women who struggle to raise families on their own are just lazy. It means we arent obligated to do anything to help anyone less fortunate than ourselves. It means we can rationalise that having more than we need while somebody else goes without is fair. It means that we dont have to examine our own attitudes and prejudice. Were all only one or two catastrophes away from poverty. What would you smug partnered women do if your husbands died or left you, and you hadnt worked outside the home for 5 or 10 years? Anyone can have a child develop a life-threatening medical condition, or develop one themselves, or be made redundant at work. Somebody here has even suggested that some women have multiple children just so they can farm them out to various relatives so everyone can sit on the dole. Does anyone here seriously know anyone who has said, I know! Ill get pregnant and have a baby just so I can give it to Auntie Sharon so she can get government benefits? Didnt think so. For the record, Im a sole parent of 4. I work full time. I thoroughly understand why many sole parents are unable to work, and its nothing to do with laziness. Im sincerely glad that the smug commentators are by and large not sole parents, because frankly theyd never cope and every struggling sole parent here knows it.
