Repost for Skye Brookshire: A Birthday Eulogy: Whos available today to fix my nails? Hey, you girls, you know that I dont like stress ooooh, I was sitting inside a small building and I heard the voice of an irritated lady shouting at a local nail shop in Atlanta, Georgia one day in 2000. The woman was gorgeous, glowing and glamorous-looking, and she was pregnant (just like me)... She had a lovely French accent and I wondered which part of the world she was from. Ladies and Gentlemen, her name is Rita Kwarm Streater from Ivory Coast; and after our meeting that day fourteen years ago, she eventually became my daughters godmother! Can you believe that we bonded immediately at her house right afterwards, and I shared my fears about delivering Skye during my second year of college. She also told me that her daughter Olivia would be born in June 2000, so when she kissed me goodbye, she promised me on that same day that she would personally help me to take care of my baby until my mother came to America etc.! Reveal: Traditionally, when Alvin and I got married on February 15th, 1999, we had to meet my family in Ghana so we chose to avoid the Y2K drama of the 1999 transition into 2000 that Christmas and we flew from Atlanta through Egypt to Liberia to Ghana etc. Now, when I got back to Spelman College the next term, I was just walking up towards the Cosby building when I collapsed... I woke up in the school hospital and the attractive doctor had a huge grin on his face, Mrs. Brookshire, you fainted he said, But I have great news for you! You are about to be a MOTHER!. I was stunned. I thought about all the countries I had visited with Mr. Brookshire and how I had landed in the soup to begin with, and I blushed inwardly (smile)! Then I stupidly asked, Who? A mother of what? A real live baby? OMG This was a shock because I was not even yet in my third year of college and we had definitely not made any provisions for a little baby in our home etc. but just as my mother and I agreed, this child would have no boundaries. The SKY(E) would not even be the limit for our little one and that is how we decided on the name Skye for my daughter as soon as we knew her gender. Once again its past 12 midnight on Tuesday, September 30th 2014 and Skye Ewurama-Ewusiwaa Brookshire is 14 years old today! Her middle name, Ewurama represents the day she was born which was on a Saturday; and I also named her Ewusiwaa after my own dear mother. More importantly, Skye is a really tough cookie! She is wise beyond her years and she is my little helper, especially when it has to do with issues regarding her younger brother, Raine Brookshires demands. Skye is ambitious, precocious, strong, bold, compassionate and extremely resilient. We have gone through a lot of challenges together where she has witnessed tremendous heartache but she has learnt how to pick up the fragile pieces quickly and put everything behind her with a knowing and assured smile. This is exactly the kind of daughter I envisioned when I thought of Skye at the Gwinnett Medical Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. I giggled foolishly when I was wheeled into the labor ward because I had no idea how painful childbirth was going to be, but Skye, guess what? I laughed once again, when you arrived 14 hours later because you were as white as snow and you looked EXACTLY like your Auntie Katherine Brookshire. After only 9 days, I returned to class at Spelman College and my Sociology Professor made my class give me a standing ovation for coming back to college to graduate on time (smile) Ronelda, do you remember what we went through as young pregnant mothers on campus?. But it has been a privilege being your mother and I am honored to go through this journey of life with you. There was a time I lost over a million dollars in assets and slept with you and your brother in my ML 320 Mercedes Benz when we lost our Douglasville house to foreclosure. And I remember when that car was repossessed for non-payment and we slept on the cold bare floor of the homeless shelter till your Grandma Naana Blay-Hill came for you and I got back on my feet. As cold as it was; I watched you give your blanket to your brother each night so that HE would be warm :-) So baby girl, YOU were my inspiration when I moved to New York to make it all over again in life before appearing Ebony Magazine! So on this blessed day, I want to say thank you to you for believing in me and not judging me at such a young and tender age! I love you dearly and I wouldnt change the way things happened for us at Spelman and all the hardship I went through because of your untimely arrival. God Bless You, My Sky(e) and Have a Fabulous Day when you wake up for school. All My Love, Mummy ML
