Repost from Rica Arevalo THE PRIVILEGED MIGRANTS “The Privileged Migrants” is a 41-minute personal documentary on the exodus of the filmmaker’s high school batch mates to different parts of the world to become an immigrant or migrant worker. Award-winning filmmaker Rica Arevalo travels to the United States of America, Thailand, Macau, Singapore and Manila and poses the question: Why leave the Philippines when one has a privileged life? Jane is the high school batch’s student council president. She comes to the United States of America as a tourist and has stayed there to work for good. She fights loneliness to earn big bucks. Chelo works in the hotel industry in Macau. With the tight laws governing migrant workers and the recession, she is in danger of losing her job. Gretchen teaches music to high school students in her alma mater. Recently, she packs her bags and leaves for Bangkok, Thailand to teach in an international school. Issa, got her permanent resident certificate in Singapore in just six months. She brings her family to adjust in a new environment. Raquel, the filmmaker’s twin sister applies in Canada as a skilled worker immigrant. She awaits the approval of her application and eventually, leaves the country. The culmination is the 20th year High School reunion held in Manila and Los Angeles, USA in 2012. Arevalo got her first Best Documentary award in the 1995 Gawad CCP for Alternative Film and Video for her thesis film, “Nag-aalinlangang Ina.” She won several scriptwriting awards in the Film Development and Carlos Palanca Literature Awards. She is the first recipient of Cinemalaya’s Best Direction award for “ICU Bed #7.” Her trilogy film, “Ganap na Babae” won in the 2010 Soho International Film Festival NYC. “The Privileged Migrants” premieres on July 27, 2013, 9pm at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Experimental Theater) as part of the Cinemalaya Documentaries section.
