GEORGE2 HAZLETT (LESLIE1) was born 1792 in Ireland1, and died Abt. 1850 in Allegheny County, PA. He married MARGARET DAVIS Abt. 1819 in Pennsylvania, daughter of ELIAS DAVIS and ELIZABETH. She was born October 02, 1795 in Maryland, and died Aft. 1850 in Allegheny County, PA. Notes for GEORGE HAZLETT: A very pleasant and at the same time very remarkable reunion took place in Butler this week. It was of the five Hazlett brothers, Leslie, Elias and George visiting their brothers William and Thomas of Butler. They are children of Geo. M. Hazlett, decd, were all born in East Deer twp., Allegheny County, and they are grandchildren of Elias Davis, one of the famous pioneers of this county. They are all in good health, all wear full beards, and all enjoyed the occasion. Leslie is 76 years of age having been born in 1821. He remembers the engineers surveying the route of the canal up the Allegheny in 1825. He now lives in North Chicago with a married daughter. Elias H. is 71 years of age, having been born in 1826. He now lives on a farm in Westmoreland Co. near New Kensington. George W. was born in 1831 and lives in Gratiot Co. Mich. near the town of Pompeii. William H. was born in 1833, and Thomas in 1836, and both live in Butler. Samuel, the other brother, was badly wounded in the Wilderness and died at his home in Allegheny about 15 years ago. They were all in the army, excepting the eldest, and Tom was in 27 engagements without receiving a scratch. This is the first time they have been together in 40 years. Of the girls of the family, Mrs. Mary Borland lives in Westmoreland Co., Nancy Critchlow at Baileyville, Kan., Margaret is the wife of of Geo. W. Haselton of Penn twp., and Jane died at the home of her brother William in Butler ten years ago. There are three widowers and two widows in the family. Her parents were married August 5, 1878 in the home and by Dr. J.W. Witherspoon, pastor of the 5th U.P. Church, Allegheny, Pa. She was baptized in the United Presbyterian Church of Remington, Beaver County, Pa. Her father, James H. Neely, engineer on the Penn. R.R.. was the son of James Neely of Baden, Pa. and Julia Hammond. He was also the grandson of Squire Neely of Swickley, Pa. A hardworking, honorable, decent family. James H. Neely died August 21, 1888 in Economy, Pa. leaving seven children. Alberta being the eldest - nine years, nine months and 5 days old. Margaret E. Critchlow was the daughter of William G. Critchlow of Butler, Pa. and Nancy Hazlett of Allegheny, Pa. William G. Critchlow was the son of William Critchlow and Elizabeth Gillish, pioneers of Butler County, Pa. The Critchlow family trace their ancestry back to the Revolutionary war. Nancy Hazlett was the daughter of George Hazlett and Margaret Davis, pioneers of Butler County, Pa. of Scotch and Welsh ancestry. Respectable, honest farmers, the Critchlows are noted for their courage and bravery during the Revolutionary War. Among them were many ministers and professional men. Of such ancestry, Alberta Neely came into this world. At the age of nine years she nursed her first maternity case (her mother gave birth to a 3 1/2 lb. boy) for which she paid the doctor $5.00 cash, all she thought the mite was worth. (Elmer Neely). After the fathers death, the family moved to Allegheny, Pa. where Alberta attended the city schools. She finished at the age of thirteen. At the age of eighteen she entered the Beaver Valley Training School for nurses, where she graduated at the age of twenty-one. At the age of twenty-three, she married George Raymond Atkins (born May 18, 1880) in her mothers home by Dr. J.W. Witherspoon (the same pastor that married her parents). To this union was born three children: William James, Edythe Virginia, and Robert Neely. George Raymond Atkins died at the age of forty-two in a hospital in Chicago, Ill. on November 3, 1922. Mrs. Alberta Atkins took up her duties as Chief Nurse in the Athens State Hospital, Athens, Ohio in 1924, where she remained until her death on June 19, 1928. They both died of pneumonia in Pittsburgh orphan’s home. One note give the 1900 year. The other note says Nancy was 7 and William was 2. If you read the bio attached you will see that their father died (unknown cause) in 1888. This would have left Margaret to handle 7 children on her own. It would have been after Jame’s death that the children were put into the orphanage.If William was indeed 2, then the year of death would have been 1889. (maybe she meant 1890 instead of 1900 ?) I have not been able to find when or where Margaret remarried, but eventually she did move to California. I know she was living there when Walter and family visited CA in the late 20’s. Walter James Neely married Anna Mable White 1 June 1910 in Nampa, Idaho. He was a conductor for the railroad. (I would have to check, but I believe that was the Union Pacific. (The Bio indicates James H Neely was an engineer, probably on the PARR,(not verified)) Grandpa Neely also was a preacher and spent some time in the Dakotas preaching. Anna May worked at Nampa Dry Cleaners for most of her life, even into her 70’s.
