Representatives from Ohio AIDS Coalition, Columbus Public Health, Nationwide Childrens FACES Program, Ohio Department of Health, AIDS Resource Center Ohio (ARC Ohio), Camp Sunrise, along with several community activists had the opportunity to tour the HIV hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. With the help of our interpreter, we were able to meet with the professionals administering the care to patients. We found that the Honduran approach to HIV healthcare is conducted in a manor mirroring our Ohio care models. One facility housed the complete continuum of care for an HIV+ patient. An individual is able to see their case manager/social worker, physiatrist, phlebotomists, pharmacist, and dentist in the same facility. The group also had the distinct pleasure of meeting a group of HIV+ Honduran prevention, education, and testing professionals at the UN AIDS compound in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Again, with the help of our interpreters we were able to discuss our individual efforts surround HIV education and support. This unique setting provided a tremendous opportunity for cross cultural dialogue, that despite the langue barrier, a tremendous amount of information was shared.
