Representatives from the ethnic armed groups and the government disclosed that the military forces of Myanmar made a proposal that the nationwide ceasefire will be signed on August 1, 2014, Eleven Media news reported. The conference was held for two days at Myanmar Peace Center from March 9 to March 10. Both the government and the ethnic armed groups released a joint announcement with five points, including a commitment to draft the nationwide ceasefire agreement together. This agreement will have seven chapters. Lieutenant-General Kyaw Swe said that they convinced the ethnic armed groups that signing of the agreement will take place on August 1 and they said to sign before the given date. Hlan Hmone from the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) said that an August 1 deadline seems practical. Moreover, Lieutenant-General Myint Soe said the result of the 2-day conference was very satisfactory. He stressed that the signing of the ceasefire agreement will be peaceful and smooth. He stressed that the date for holding the Hpa-an conference will depend on this conference. The Hpa-an conference will be the last stage where they will sign the agreement. Hlan Hmone expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the military for having the conference. This is a very good development for the country, he said. On the 1st week of April, representatives from both sides will meet in Yangon to further discuss on military affairs. According to Naing Han Tha from NCCT, various points of understanding were reached by both parties during the said conference. Nonetheless, there are still many challenges to resolve including how to amend the 2008 Constitution, how to establish a federal state as demanded by ethnic groups and what troop settlements will look like in the future. Among those who participated in the conference from the side of the government includes five ministers, four lieutenant-generals, one major-general, one colonel from the military, three parliamentary MPs and a deputy attorney general.
