Reproducing an ex tempore post i wrote on the status of Abrar Ahmad about Urdu fiction. 1-Urdu readership is very limited. In a place like Lucknow you can’t get Urdu fiction anywhere. So the writer has no incentive to write world level fiction. 2- Assuming for a moment Urdu is the language mainly of Muslims, Muslim society never had the culture of reading fiction until recently, say 75 years, that too only among well off middle class families. 3- Urdu fiction has been mainly influenced by qissa goi style of writing, and instead of genuine fiction, historical novels having religious flavor were more popular. 4- Urdu fiction has been more influenced by Urdu poetry . It depended more on flowery ornamental language than art of storytelling , and raising of genuine socio economic issues through fiction. 5- Urdu fiction lacked research and study by authors, it was based more on imagination and here say, was mainly written in drawing rooms instead into the heat and dust of society. 6- Reading fiction has never been a priority with Urdu speaking masses because of economic pressures. Urdu got tough competition with contemporary regional languages. 7-Since Urdu speaking masses commonly belonged to conservative and religious values, the scope of acceptability of matured fiction in Urdu remains limited. 8- Writing science fiction or any other kind of non conventional fiction is unthinkable in urdu language. 9- there have been some great humorist in urdu fiction like Patras Bukhari , Shaukat Thanvi, Fikr Tonsvi, Kanhaiya lal kapoor, and others. Some of the urdu humor is directly influenced by English humor. In present times Mushtaq Yusufi is too good. 10- All said and discussed, Prem Chand iremains an unmatched unparalleled fiction teller; Qarratul ainhaider, Manto, Ismat chughtai, Bano Qudsia , Kishan Chandar, Rajendra Singh Bedi, Baldev Singh and lot many present contemporary Pakistani fiction writers stand very tall in fiction writing, and can directly stare into the eyes of lot many so called fiction writers of international repute. -ahsan
