Reps, NMA, Education Ministry meet over schools’ resumption September 10, 2014Leave a Comment The House of Representatives Committee on Education has said that it would be holding a joint meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association and the Federal Ministry of Education over the Federal Government’s directive to schools to resume on September 22 as against October 12. The lower chamber of the National Assembly stated that the proposed meeting, slated for September 15, would address the appropriateness of a review of the September 22 resumption in view of the Ebola outbreak. Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Aminu Usman, stated that the concerns raised by the NMA over the new resumption date would not be brushed aside. Usman spoke on Thursday during an oversight function visit to the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, alongside members of the committee. According to Aminu, since the NMA as the foremost professional medical association in the country had kicked against the new resumption date until the Ebola Virus Disease was effectively contained, it would be wise for the House of Representatives to meet with key stakeholders. “The NMA has advised government not to allow students to resume on the 22nd of this month. The NMA is made up of professionals and there are certain things they could have seen, which may be unclear to us. “We have invited the officials of both NMA and Federal Ministry of Education on Monday (September 15) for a meeting for us to look into the issues of Ebola disease once again. We are going to look into the demands of the NMA and come out with decision in the best interest of the country,” the lawmaker said. It would be recalled that the Minister of Education, Mr. Ibrahim Shekarau, had earlier stated that the October 12 resumption date was to give health officials enough time to bring the Ebola Virus Disease under control. However, following protests by private school owners, the Federal Government made a U-turn and opted for September 22.
