Republican Presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower got himself - TopicsExpress

Republican Presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower got himself elected by campaigning for the largest good-government-public-works-project the world has ever known; the Interstate Highway system. He, and Congress, delivered. The entire country was behind it, including wealthy, patriotic Americans whose taxes went up to pay for it. Building highways across the country fostered a generation of good-American-middle-class-jobs. We got our marvelous highway system and the country prospered because of very good government economic stimulus. Fast forward a generation to Ronald Reagan, who got himself elected by campaigning against good government. Government workers were lazy and useless, and millions of Americans were lining up to steal from you, the taxpayer, he said. American bought it. For two generations, good government was slashed and burned. A new, unfettered capitalism emerged that increasingly favored the wealthy and punished the poor. Today, the Interstate Highway system is in serious need of repair. Our education system is floundering. 400 people in America at the top are now wealthier than 185 million Americans at the bottom of the economic ladder, and they are not paying their fair share. Congress is run by a handful of thugs whose donors wield power over enough members to keep anything from happening at all, except lining the pockets of the thugs. Good government is the instrument of Democracy. As in every other part of life, balance is the key. We are way out of balance. We can fix this. But you have to vote. And you have to vote for people who have the interest of you and your neighbors at heart. Much more difficult with the influence of money today, but I am optimistic.
