Republicans are unhinged by the fear that Barack Obama will once again turn out to be as strong a finisher as Mr. Smith—a sweet, earnest, inexperienced naïf who, after a certain amount of bumbling, ends up on top. That’s the Obama who won the nomination and the election in 2008, got health care passed in 2010, cruised to reëlection in 2012, and, as of now, has somehow presided over a degree of diplomatic progress, with respect to the Syrian poison-gas attacks and the Iranian nuclear threat, that would have been simply unimaginable a couple of months ago. Or—worse—that by holiday time, when the enrollment period for Obamacare rolls around, he’ll turn out to have been Santa Claus.
