Republicans like Rubio and King rightly condemn Obamas executive-branch lawmaking, yet essentially cede to him Congress constitutional power to declare war. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. King actually goes so far as to say hes ok with Obama asking Congress for authorization to wage war against ISIS, but only if hes absolutely sure in advance that Congress will provide it; otherwise, he says, Obama should just act. I recognize ISIS might very well constitute such a threat to our national security as to warrant US military action, but imminent threat (so as to circumvent the need for congressional approval to wage war) is defined so broadly by Rubio and King (and many other members of Congress on both sides of the political aisle) as to create a monarchy when it comes to waging war. It is nothing less than an abdication of their constitutional duty, and they should be ashamed. The attached piece nails it: We’ve reached the point as a nation where checks and balances now involves members of the legislature demanding that their own branch be sidelined in matters of truly grave national importance.
