Request for Donations Phongsavanh is a cute 6-year-old Laotian boy with Thalassemia, a blood disease that is always fatal. He is now dying and his parents are desperately trying to arrange a transplant using stored stem cells combined with bone marrow transplanted from his younger brother, who is a perfect match, to save his life. They have almost used up their life savings just trying to find a hospital that can offer the transplant and prepare for the operation. The only hospital they could find is in Bangkok and the cost is more than they have. They need 2.3 million Baht before the operation can be performed on 23 August 2013. Many people are trying to help Phongsavanh, including the company that stored his brother’s stem cells, Cryoviva Thailand, of which I am proud to be a part of. Cryoviva has been kind enough to donate some money and is arranging a charity run to raise more. However, it isn’t enough. No one has ever come forward with the stem cells and a child with Thalassemia before in Thailand. If they can go ahead, this may turn out to be a new door opening for other parents to save their children’s lives.
