Requesting prayers for my father, Carl Mathews. On Wednesday night at 7:15 his SUV was hit by a guy who ran a stop sign. My father was bayflighted to Tampa general hospital, were they put him in ICU to be stabilize. Yesterday they performed a 7 hour surgery to stabilize his neck. He was hit on the drivers side and his neck was broken between the 5th and 6th vertebrae. It literally was at an angel that there was a 1/4 gap on his left side. The doctor today showed us the X-ray and said it was a miracle that hes alive. The damage was so severe that spinal fluid was leaking out of his spine and the artery on his left side is no longer functioning. The doctors have given him only a 5% chance of ever walking again. It seems he is paralyzed from the neck down. Thankfully he didnt have any internal injuries or broken bones besides his neck. He does have some movement in his right hand and some feeling in his left hand. He is able to understand us but not talk because hes still on a ventilator. They are hoping to take him off the ventilator tomorrow. If this happens then he will be moved to rehab in the next couple of days. Please pray for his recovery and Gods grace to bring more miracles and allow him to walk again. He will also need your prayers to have the strength to endure rehab. This is the beginning of a very long road to recovery. Thankfully he has a will to live and a family who will be by his side the whole time.
