Rescue Of Beautiful Dog with South Side Street Dogs: Operation Houston #StrayDogCity On 12/30/14 WA2S Films rode along with Erika Emal and Sandro Gamez, with South Side Street Dogs. With us on the route were Angela Madeksho and Brittany of A.D.O.R.E. Houston, and Tena Faust and Tama Lundquist of Houston PetSet. Erika and Sandro live in the Houston neighborhood of Sunnyside, where stray dog issues abound. There multitudes of dogs roaming the streets, and we also learned a few disturbing things that go on in this area. Our first stop at 8:45am was at the site of a deceased dog. For Sandro it was difficult to tell what had happened merely by looking at the dog, though due to some markings on a nearby sign there was reason to believe that the dog’s death may have been gang related. Our next stop in the video could have been a dangerous situation. There were loose dogs near a house along with a dog chained in a large muddy area of the yard. The chained dog was covered in mud which was disturbing to see on such a cold day. Erika determined that the Humane Society should pay a visit to this home, educating the owners of the dogs on the legal requirement to have shelter for your dogs. A gentleman who claimed to be a visitor spoke with Sandro who calmed the situation, as this gentleman didn’t appear to want visitors near or on his property. Our next find was Scout, a dog that Erika and Sandro hadn’t seen in quite a while. Scout had been neutered and returned to his owners by South Side Street Dogs. It appeared that though owned, he remains collarless and roams the streets. His family was at the park on the street where we found him and they were happy to chat with us. We learned that Killer is another of their dogs, and the family was watching him closely to be sure he didn’t go in the road. By late morning we had seen a multitude of stray dogs, but there were more. 3 larger breed dogs frequent a field right next to where a semi-truck cab parks. For the most part these dogs were in good shape but were happy to take part in the food that Sandro brought for them. The next dog we stopped for had cow-like markings and was hungry. She was a bit wary of us but was very interested in the food. It appeared that she had some kind of infection in her left eye but was otherwise not in too bad of shape. This same dog appeared to us in a field a few streets away from where we first saw and fed her. And then we came across 2 dogs chained to dog houses attached to a property that was abandoned. Watch what happens next... Right around the corner we came across a very active medium sized tan dog. It became clear that this dog had an injured back left leg to go with some mange on his face. He was very friendly and happily accepted a treat that he enjoyed before Brittany skillfully got a leash around him for the rescue. A.D.O.R.E. would have him vetted and start looking for a family for him. This video shows only a handful of the dogs that we interacted with in the 3 hours during which Erika and Sandro showed us Sunnyside. Though we thought we had seen a lot of dogs, Erika and Sandro agreed that there weren’t many dogs out that morning. As residents of Sunnyside, Erika and Sandro are ambassadors of education in their community and are working toward solutions.
