Rescue of a Cat & Wild Birds (few Dead) from Gypsies meant for Slaughter: Team PFCI raided at a Gypsy Colony late evening yesterday, 27th December @ Avadi, Chennai by 5 PM. When we raided, we could Rescue a Cat (Colour-Tabby) & 11 Wild Birds named as Cattle Egret (Mostly Dead). The Cat & Birds were illegally caught. These Animals were caught for the purpose of Slaughter. Cat meat is either consumed by the Narikuravas or sold in the market as Chicken. The Birds were meant to be sold in the market as Exotic meat. Just opposite to the Avadi Railway Station lives a Colony of Narikoravas. When we entered, we could see many cages mostly empty that were kept outside every household of the Gypsy family. Among them, 2 Cages had a Cat & 11 White Birds. The Cat looked very much stressed as he was being restless in the Cage. The 11 Birds which were White in colour was mostly covered by Blood. These Birds were looking very famished & other than 2 Birds, the rest 9 were lying on the floor of the Cage. Later we found that these beautiful Birds are Cattle Egret which is a cosmopolitan species of heron found in the tropics, (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_egret) The Birds were caught in a very cruel & brutal manner. The Birds were caught either by pelting stones or by using a catapult. Seeing this absolute brutality we called 100. Within few minutes, the Police came to the spot & with their help we rescued the Cat & 11 Birds. Within no time, we took both the Cages & rushed to the Police Station. A complaint was given by PFCI. Sub Inspector Mrs Saraswathi (94981 00086) received the complaint & gave a CSR at the earliest so that we could take the Birds in distress to the Wildlife Dept as soon as possible. The 11 Birds were handed over to the Wild Life Department located @ Velachery Road and the poor Cat was handed over to PFA. The Cat is a fighter & he will surely be alright. But the Poor Birds are very sick & injured. Not many will be able to make it. Wildlife Ranger Mr Edison (94456 75514) assured us that he will do everything within his rights to save the Birds. This is the 3rd Rescue of Cats from Gypsies in the last 2 months. On 6th December we rescued 13 Cats @ Pallavaram from Gypsies & On past Diwali, PFCI raided Gypsies @ Redhills & rescued 20 Cats from Slaughter. These 20 + 13 Cats are also sheltered @ PFA, Redhills.
