Rescue work is rewarding, but it is also heartbreaking. As the cold weather approaches, calls pour in daily to rescue groups and shelters. Good citizens bring abandoned, abused, forgotten pets out of the bitter cold, and reach out for help to find them homes. Rescues and shelters beg for families to adopt them... its a sad, never-ending cycle. The other night, it went down to 10 degrees. I received a text that night about a male boxer in Rogers AR TIED to a clothes line. Kind hearted citizens had earlier offered the family of the boxer an Igloo doghouse anticipating the cold weather; they REFUSED it. That night the three of us worked diligently to rescue this boxer from the bitter cold; animal control in Rogers was not available, the humane society was closed for the day, and we were left without legal recourse knowing this boxer was in the cold with a family potentially hostile to private property intruders. THANK GOD this dog survived the night! Later the next day, the family was ticketed (the boxer wasnt registered or tagged for rabies) and they are now on the radar. Animal control is also bound by laws that prevent them from just taking an animal simply because he or she is left in the cold with completely inappropriate shelter. This is just ONE dog left in below freezing weather! You may ask why didnt someone TAKE the dog from there... or how could you let this happen... but we must work within the constraints of the law, with only FEW volunteers, limited funds and more needy boxers than we have people to help . Its a crazy world full of selfish people who shouldnt even have pets. We try our best to rescue as many as we can. Thats all we can do. Its heartbreaking to tell someone we simply cannot take in even one more boxer -- were full! Without foster homes we have NO recourse. Without funding, we cant help the ones we DO bring in. Without volunteers we are limited. If you can volunteer as a foster in your state or town, call them and sign up today! If you can donate to help this or a rescue near you, PLEASE DO!
