Research time! Many of you have heard me reference the Vagas Nerve in reference to hyperactivity issues or decreased immune function. This article explains how the Vagas Nerve is the gut brain connection beautifully! The Vagas Nerve passes within a millimeter of Atlas vertebra - the very top one in your spine. So even a slight misalignment can affect its function. Thats where the authors of this paper miss the boat. They talk about electrically stimulating Vagas Nerve to get the desired result when you can instead just adjust the misaligned vertebra to restore proper function! It can be postulated that the neural input to the spleen (or any other organ for that matter) determines the set point for the magnitude of the innate immune response towards pathogens or tissue damage. Decreased or absent neural input will increase the set point with exaggerated proinflammatory responses and tissue damage, whereas increased input results in inadequate immune defense. As part of this concept, the tone of the nervous input to the immune system may thus have a major impact of the host defense and development of disease.
