Researchers at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine found that ‘comfort food’ is an appropriate term. Snacking on hyper-palatable food – for example, cookies and milk can actually dampen the nervous system’s response to stress. Their conclusion is that stress itself can alter the pattern of food consumption and therefore also promote cravings for very calories-dense hyper-palatable foods; through a chain of biochemical responses. This shows once again just one of a myriad of ways where if you don’t control stress – stress controls you. Once your nervous system is “calmed” by rewarding it with junk food – it will seek that “medication” in the presence of stress again and again. As you can see as I’ve been saying for years now – this is NOT a diet-issue; it’s a behavioral issue predicated upon the emotional fitness (or lack of it) when dealing with stress (or not dealing with it) (Scott, K.A. et al, “Effects of Chronic Stress on Obesity” Current Obesity Reports, 2012) – see also my own book “Beyond Metabolism: Understanding Your Modern Diet Dilemma”)
