Residents within the Shire of Kalamunda can expect some new changes this year for their most cherished family member as the new cat law comes into effect. The Western Australia Government passed the WA Cat Act legislation in 2011, with the aim of promoting responsible cat ownership. All provisions of the Cat Act 2011 will come into effect on the 1 November 2013, and is enforceable by all local governments. The new law will require all domestic cats which are three months or older, to be sterilized, micro chipped and registered with their local council. The cats must also wear an identification tag at all times. The Shire of Kalamunda urges residents to be responsible pet owners and to follow these guidelines to avoid penalties. Acting CEO Clayton Higham says “I strongly encourage all cat owners to become proactive in relation to the implementation of this new law.” “Losing a pet can be hard for some families and owners and by registering your cat at your local council, there may be a greater chance of being reunited with your pet.” “The purpose of this Act is to encourage and promote responsible cat ownership, reduce the number of unwanted cats that are being bred and to allow cats which are found in public and private areas to be reunited with their owners.” It is anticipated that cat registration in the Shire of Kalamunda will be available by 1 November 2013. Micro chipping and sterilization services are available at all local vets. During the development of the legislation, extensive public consultation was undertaken by the State Government and as a result four key elements of the Act were decided upon.
