Resonator World: The Mandolin entered into North America during the first migration from eastern and southern Europe. In the 1880’s Italian immigration saw the ‘bowl backed’ or Neapolitan Mandolin emerge. The Mandolin is a musical instrument found in the Lute family and is played with a ‘pick or plectrum’. Mandolins have been seen with 8, 10 or 12 strings. The more common is the 8 string, which has four courses of doubles strings tuned in unison, this tuning is in a succession of perfect fifths. Many styles of the Mandolin exist the most common are the Round Backed also known as the Neapolitan, the Arch or Carved Top and the Flat Backed. The arch top has a shallower, arched back with an arched top carved from wood. The Flat Backed is made from thin sheets of wood for the body, that are braced on the inside to provide strength. All the styles of Mandolin have their own particular form of music associated with them, in the sound and tone quality. Enter what is known as the Resophonic Mandolin, which was developed by John Dopyera. In 1929 the Dobro Manufacturing Company manufactured not only resophonic guitars but ukuleles and mandolins made with a cone and spider. Interesting to note, that mandolins manufactured under the Dobro brand had wood bodies, while the National brand had metal bodies, National manufactured resophonic mandolins until 1941. The resophonic cone was introduced to make the Mandolin louder than its standard wooden version, which also produces a very different tone, quality, sound and does provide a very different looking Mandolin than its wooden version. The sound and tone is produced from one or more metal or aluminum cones. Very seldom would you see a mandolin played in the lap like a guitar, most mandolins are played mainly in the conventional ‘upright’ manner.
