Resource Guarding. Part II. Dollar For a Pickle You are in a restaurant with friends, having a great time. Without warning, one of your friends reaches onto your plate and takes one of your French fries. You don’t like it, but she’s a great friend and you don’t want to spoil the mood, so you do nothing. But then your friend continues to do it every time you are out together. Depending on what type of person you are, eventually you would probably: Politely ask her to stop Hover over your plate Slap her hand Stop going to dinner with her Etc.. One thing that won’t happen – you won’t begin to like it. Imagine if this happened instead: You take your pickle slice off your burger because you don’t like pickles. You friend offers you a dollar for the pickle. You happily oblige. Then at the next dinner she does the same. Eventually you are really going to look forward to dinner with the friend – in case she offers you a dollar for something you don’t even like. Later, she offers 5 dollars for one fry. You like fries, but you like 5 dollars even more, so you happily oblige. She does this often; then one day she just takes a fry without asking but gives you 100 dollars right afterwards. You would probably start looking forward to giving fries to your friend. Playing with a dog’s food while he is eating or periodically taking the dog’s bowl while she is eating will not prevent nor fix resource guarding. And for some dogs, it might even create it. Petting a dog while eating can also be problematic. For more on this, see #ResourceGuardingBCM and Jean Donaldson’s book, “Mine.” Video of human stealing food.
