Responding to..... Yesterday I made the comment that read... looks like some Christmas decorations are starting to show up... Have you put yours up yet? I know several people that have. One of our viewers responded with this.... Christmas Decorations ?? Really are you kidding We just had Halloween Your consumerism is taking alot of my holiday spirit away. First I would like to start out with the definition of consumerism….. compliments of the Webster dictionary.... “the belief that it is good for people to spend a lot of money on goods and services. : the actions of people who spend a lot of money on goods and services” ... Now for my opinion..... I will not go into the religious aspect of Christmas as that is something personal to each of us and in my opinion, should not be part of a forum or discussion such as this. My beliefs are…quite frankly…my beliefs. I know what the meaning of Christmas is to me. Having said that…. Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year and I start planning weeks in advance.... why.....because of family and friends. This is the time that you get together and celebrate. You may sing (Christmas caroling), you may dance (Christmas parties), you may drink eggnog... yuck.... you eat and then you eat some more… fully enjoying the many different kinds of cookies and fudge you are consuming and forgetting about the 5 to 10 pounds soon to show up on your body. This is the reason I start in advance. And this is the reason I asked the question. I shop early to avoid the crowds. I take my time choosing the special gifts I would like to give my family and friends. I put up my decorations after.... yes... Halloween... as it may take me several weeks to complete... Yes I have five Christmas trees... why..... because I want to enjoy the twinkle in the eyes of my grandchildren when they walk through the door. Many of the decorations I made....my children made... my grandchildren made or they are decorations handed down in the family. Instead of shopping on the weekends in December.…. I want to visit with my family and friends. I want to have time to bake the cookies and holiday sweets we love to eat. I want to see my 7 year old Granddaughter dance in the Christmas programs that bring a smile to the faces of those in nursing homes. I want to go to the school Christmas programs to see my Grandchildren sing. I want to see that Nutcracker Ballet. I want to do this without being exhausted. I have seen the tired faces of those rushing around at the last minute. Too many… it may seem like a chore. Back to the comment about my consumerism.... I asked about Christmas decorations and was accused of consumerism... do we spend too much on gifts... maybe... but it is the Christmas spirit … we are celebrating... It is the spirit or meaning of Christmas that is within each of us…. it is tradition that is unique to each family….it is about the family and friends we are celebrating with...... is that not worth it.... This is my opinion... ~Debbie
