Response from City Power regarding cable theft: City Power is experiencing constant cable theft incidents in Ennerdale and other areas where it supplies electricity in Johannesburg. Approximately 3000 incidents of cable theft take place on our network per year costing us R11 million in repairing and replacing the cables. City Power is fighting cable theft by having a response vehicle which patrols high risk areas based on theft and vandalism statistics. City Power also conducts joint Operations with SAPS on Scrap metal dealers from time to time because that is where cable thieves sell stolen cables. City Power is installing pole to ground sleeves and aerial conductor cables (ABC) across the city of Johannesburg to prevent cables being cut by cable thieves. Another reason is that ABC cable is made of aluminum and it is of no value to cable thieves. City Power has partnership with SAPS and JMPD to combat cable theft. City Power is also conducting educational awareness in the communities that are affected by cable theft. City Power has a patrol vehicle but it does cover a large area, this makes it difficult to prevent every cable theft incident. Residents should be on lookout for suspicious construction vehicles working on our electrical network whether marked or unmarked and report them to Control Room at the following numbers 24hrs a day: ➢ 011 490 7911 ➢ 011 490 7900 ➢ 011 490 7553 ➢ Or a toll free no. 0800 003 251 Residents should also report trolley pushers to the above-mentioned numbers should they suspect them of cable theft. The more residents report cable theft incidents, the more City Power becomes aware of escalating trends in communities where these incidents are taking place , consequently City Power is able to dispatch resources to areas where they are highly needed. We conduct educational awareness in communities and other forums. We also engage the private security service providers and SAPS in hot-spot areas not to focus on house breaking and robbery crimes only but also to have an understanding of the impact of cable theft and vandalism on the electrical infrastructure. City Power has started a process of applying concrete on surfaces where cables have been laid. For more information please contact Sol Masolo at 078 192 88 11.
