Response from Jonathan Irwin, CEO and Founder of Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation, in relation to Minister for Health Leo Varadkar’s comments on medical cards “For the new Minister for Health to signal now that he may walk away from the Government’s plan to start issuing medical cards on the grounds of medical conditions as reported in the media today, is both ill timed and defeatist. “Why say this before his expert panel on medical cards has reviewed all the submissions made by organisations such as ours and come back with their recommendations in September? Is he trying to condition us for failure? “All the Minister has done is added fuel to our fire on medical cards and this debate will erupt again over the summer which is putting the cart before the horse and will sadly increase the stress levels of our families. Families, in every community in Ireland, who just want to care for their sick child at home and who need and deserve all the support they can get from the State. Families who save the State millions of euro every year by keeping their sick child at home rather than blocking a hospital bed. “The Jack & Jill team want to assure our 300 families with children with life limiting and life threatening conditions that we will stand behind you. We won’t give up until our precious children have their medical cards issued automatically in their own name, in their own right. “As a nation we can’t talk children’s rights, have a referendum on the rights of the child, sign up to the UN Convention on the rights of the child, without putting this into practice by issuing the sick child with their passport to care which is their medical card. “Jack & Jill will continue to explore all avenues political, legal and medical to make this happen.” irishtimes/news/health/minister-for-health-leo-varadkar-signals-shift-in-medical-card-policy-1.1871338
