Response from Saki Tuisolia on my Posting against Khaiyums Thesis (Sunset Clause) This is the crux of Fijis horrendous joy ride with Frank the idiot on the wheels and Aiyaz the wana be smart and know it all telling him where to drive and how to drive and what to knock over and what to spare along the way. Guess who is in the car? The entire population of Fiji. Why are they in the car? They had no choice because Frank and Aiyaz hijacked the car and have promised them a future of deliverance and liberation. Down the road the Car will have a serious accident because the pilots are drunk with power, greed, corruption and self interest that they cant clearly see the way anymore. Guess who is going to die from the crash? All the Fijians will die from the cultural cleansing that will result from this ridiculous joy ride that Fiji is on. The Fijians can avoid disaster by getting off the car now. They can only do that by voting out Frank and Aiyaz. Are Frank and Aiyaz fit or qualified to drive? The answer is a big NO! Frank is an idiot and not qualified. Aiyaz thinks he is smart to be Franks driving instructor and he is not. Just look at his thesis and how way of the mark it is in terms of his understanding of Fijian culture and tradition and chiefly systems. Aiyaz is not smart but the danger is that Frank thinks he is smart and a lot of not so smart people in Fiji including expats think he is smart. Fijians listen to me. We are one of the most popular and loved race in the world because of our culture and tradition and sociable and caring ways. Lets not lose our identity and what makes us who we are. But believe me we are not perfect either! One of our biggest challenge is good of governance and its weakness in our traditional system. But that does not mean we have to throw it away. The very democratic and capitalism system that we are aspiring too is also riddled with weak governance. But they are trying to fix it and that is why for example the corporate world and UNDP, SPC, Forum and donors spend billions of dollars on governance. Enron failed its shareholders and stakeholders but that does not mean that the corporate model is discarded - the world has smartly responded by strengthening corporate governance. With our traditional system, we should respond in the same fashion but not discard it like Aiyaz is advocating. The Fijian traditional system is like an umbrella with the chiefs being the stick that holds it up. You remove the stick and there is nothing to hang the Fijian traditional system on and it will simply collapse. The thick Aiyaz does not understand that but he advocates that it be done in the interest of individualism. That is most insulting and disrespectful and a deliberate desecration of Fijian culture. It will be the same as me cursing Allah. A principle of the Fijian traditional system is that the chiefs are there to serve the people and vice verse. This is also the foundation of their practice of communalism which is basically the modern equivalent of social inclusion. Of course there been many occasions in our rich history that Chiefs have failed their people but I attribute this to human weakness. It can be fixed through the promotion of good governance and adjustments to what is a living culture. But to suggest that it be discarded is insane. I am an indigenous Fijian currently living overseas and I am proud to be one. I grew up in the village and fully embrace my culture and tradition. There are certain aspects of it that needs to change to conform to the demands of modern living like less elaborate funerals and church fundraising which can be a waste of time and money but I am outraged at wholesale changes advocated by Aiyaz and supported by Frank. The last thing also is for an Indo-Fijian to be telling us how to live and change our culture and traditional system. Thats a matter that is exclusive only to us. Fijians and Indo-Fijians are absolutely equal and but are not the same. Equality is our strength and the glue that should propel the future peace and prosperity of Fiji but we should also be mindful, respect and celebrate our diversity which is also our strength.
