Rest in Peace, Johnny Cash There once was a fellow named Cash Who was short on flamboyance and flash But long on compassion Great music he fashioned But often got wasted on hash He was born in an Arkansas town Where chickens are raised and put down Then get shipped out of state To be served on a plate Nicely fried to a deep golden brown John grew up in a very bad time When a meal could be had for a dime Unemployment was high Many wells had run dry And the cities were teeming with crime He picked cotton when still just a lad To help out both his Mother and Dad When their cupboards were bare During times of despair They made do with the little they had The depression eventually ended And a lot that was broken got mended Prohibition was lifted As attitudes shifted And many an elbow was bended John began writing songs as a teen For a music career he was keen Then at age 25 His big break would arrive When Sun Records arrived on the scene Sam Phillips’s label was thriving When Johnny was barely surviving Sam enjoyed how he sang But got rid of his twang Soon a shiny new car he was driving Johnny Cash soon was bigger than life With June Carter, his song writing wife They had lots of success And a fancy address But they also had serious strife Along with the wealth and acclaim John had pressure and physical pain Getting stoned brought relief And a new form of grief As he fried many cells in his brain But he battled his demons with force Never showing a hint of remorse For the path he had taken But now had forsaken To set a much healthier course He sang for the homeless and boozers And for those who were labeled as losers He sang for the cons As they paid for their wrongs And he sang for the substance abusers Now Johnny’s been gone for ten years And he’s missed by his fans and his peers In his time on this Earth Through the sadness and mirth He was music to millions of ears
