Rest in peace, Mei Ling Stafford. In 2003, we picked up a dog - TopicsExpress

Rest in peace, Mei Ling Stafford. In 2003, we picked up a dog from Florida Boxer Rescue. Her name was Mei Ling, and she was a mess. She had been abandoned, suffered from stress induced mange, and just looked sad. We took her into our family and, with love, she thrived. She was an amazing dog in every way and she loved everyone who pet her, especially kids. She loved children and was incredibly patient with them, even when the small ones were rough with her or would pull her ears. She wasnt without her mischievous side; once, I came home to find she had gotten the boxes of girl scout cookies off of the table and eaten herself into a sugar-induced stupor. She also had a habit of sneaking on top of the dining room table to lay in the sun. She was afraid of thunder and would try to hide under the bed during storms, but she was too big. It was funny to see this big dog with just her head stuck under the bed waiting for the storm to pass. However, one of her most amazing skills was related to her being very sensitive. I am prone to migraines from time to time. There were many days where Mei would come and sit next to me and lean against me, almost as if she were trying to give me a hug. I couldnt figure it out at first, but eventually it was clear: she could sense when I had a migraine coming on, even before I felt it. It was her way of trying to either warn me or comfort me. She had never been trained to do anything like that, it was just her. Unfortunately, there was a divorce, and Mei couldnt stay in an apartment with me; I tried, but she was just too big and the apartment too small, it wasnt fair to her. However, she did have a good life with her mom and grandparents. She became the victim of cancer and was laid to rest earlier this month. We loved Mei and she will forever be in our hearts. She was a beautiful example of how a loving family can heal a damaged pet, and how that love and healing is returned a thousand-fold. Thinking of her and her antics still brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. I pray that one day I see her again, and she will sit next to me and lean against me, the deepest expression of her love.
