Restoring History By Randy Bartley BROOKVILLE — A piece of Brookville’s history that been AWOL (Absent With Out Leave) has been returned to duty. Following the end of World War I massive amounts of military trophies were shipped to the United States to be displayed as war trophies. The cannon sitting on the lawn of the Jefferson County Courthouse and a 1908 model Maxim machine gun was another. The Maxim stood for decades on the lawn of the old American Legion Post 102 building on Jefferson Street. Over the years the condition of the gun deteriorated and it was removed and placed in a private collection. The gun was later turned over to the Jefferson County Historical Society. Dave Deemer, Past Commander of Post 102, suggested the machine gun could be refurbished and join the cannon on the courthouse lawn. “I suggested the project to Troop 64 and Lance Carrier jumped on the idea,” said Deemer. “We want to thank the Jefferson County Historical Society for donating the machine gun for this project and the Jefferson County Commissioners for their support,” said Deemer. “Lance never seems to run out of energy,” said Deemer. “In addition to sports and school projects he is also a Junior Firemen.” That began a two year project that included fabricating metal pieces of the carriage of the machine gun and a lot of help. “I want to thank my father and mother, (Jeff and Jackie) for their help, my uncle Tom Carrier, my brother Nicholas for their help and encouragement.” “I want to thank the members of American Legion Post 102 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 204 for their support,” said Lance Carrier. Lance Carrier also extended his thanks to Fox’s Pizza for their help in fund raising, Brookville Glove, John Atwell, Baker Auto, Ace Hardware and Glenn Redi-Mix for the cement pad. A plaque will be added in the near future to complete the project. “After two years, it is a good feeling to have it done,” said Lance Carrier.
