Results and selected reports from todays action areas: IFA development teams: U8s v Crusaders Vikings This was the penultimate match in the IFA Grassroots Development league (Newtownabbey) before the Winter break against a very talented Crusaders team. Scores are not recorded within the development league, however it is worth mentioning that Rovers showed fantastic determination & resilience by scoring 5 goals in quick succession to overturn an early 5-0 deficit. Jack McCombe made some super saves as goalkeeper and overall there was excellent team work on display. On the score sheet today was Jude Rafferty (3 Goals), Reuben Millar (2 Goals) & Scott McCaig (1 Goal). Well done to all the players … Great effort once again. U9s v Larne Youth The U9s never stop in their improvement. The passing and movement of the ball by these players is a joy to watch. The team spirit is never ending. Goal scorers today: Jack Carson(1), Ryan Clarke (2) Cody McCreight (2) & Nathan McMullan (1). Man of the match today goes to 2 players who never stop working throughout the game, well done to Jack Carson and Nathan McMullan U10s v Whitehead eagles *****No fixtures for U11s or U12s for month of November due to AQE tests***** South Belfast Youth League: U13 Rovers 3 Comber 3 Rovers were playing comber Rec (who are 3rd in league). Rovers started very strong with our defence dealing with Combers forwards, our midfielders closed well with good runs forward from Ryan Crilly and Josh Jennings. Tyler Hoey was playing centre mid today ( a new position for him) he played hard winning a lot of tackles. After 15mins Jack Hill passed the ball to Josh Jennings who flicked the ball up and hit a lovely ball up and over Combers keeper for us to score our first league goal and take the lead. Then Rovers won a free kick, Jack Hill took it putting the ball up high and beating the keeper. At half time Rovers were 2 up. Comber came out in the 2nd half with a point to prove, they pushed hard as we sat back. Comber scored their 3 goals very quickly. Rovers didnt lie down, Calum Lecky got the ball and ran down the right wing beating a few players and took a shot with his left foot scoring a lovely goal to equalise. Jack Murray made a great save to keep Rovers in the game. Rovers played today as a team, defenders clearing the line, midfielders closing down and forwards trying to get through. It was a great match to watch. Well done to both teams U14 Rovers 3 Dungoyne 7 Rovers took on unbeaten Dungoyne this morning at a very wet Mallusk. After collecting their first league win last weekend the young Rovers team started brightly and enjoyed plenty of possession. However, after 22 mins found themselves 2 goals down, a combination of poor concentration and sloppy defending , costing the “home” side dearly. A reply from Dylan Robb, firing past the keeper from a direct free kick, offered Mark Gourley’s lads hope but this hope was soon dashed as Rovers conceded a third when Dungoyne scored from a looping cross turned shot which left keeper Aiden no chance. Half time 1-3. Some tactical changes and substitutions were made, with the introduction of both pacey strikers Nathan McKee and Jonny McCammond into the fray allowing Rovers the opportunity to impose their own style of play much more and, even after falling further behind to 2 more goals, the Antrim boys persevered with “pass and move” football resulting in goals from Emmett Murray and Jonny McCammond. Such was the concern from Dungoyne’s players that they began to waste time at every chance, much to the frustration of Rovers players and management team. But, in the search for more goals and in the face of some very heavy challenges which went unpunished, Rovers back line was breached again after they were caught on the counter attack with the final score of 3-7 not telling the whole story. A patchy performance but nothing negative could be taken from such gutsy play when heads could so easily have dropped. With their main objective of at least mid table in the premier league as a target, things still look promising for the boys in red & black! U15 Rovers v Carnmoney Colts. ( No report available) U16 Rovers 5 Carryduff 1 Rovers u16s continued on their winning ways in the league campaign with a well deserved 5-1 victory over a very useful Carryduff Colts side. Rovers settled early into their stride and could have been goals to the good before centre forward Dermot Mcerlane opened his and rovers account with a well placed lob over the goalkeeper in the twentieth minute. Just before halftime Dermot doubled his and rovers account with a terrific twenty yard effort that flew into the top right hand corner of the net. Half time Rovers 2 Carryduff 0. The second half resumed with Rovers in ascendancy and a great solo effort, beating three defenders, completed Dermots hat trick. Dermot scored his own and Rovers fourth from the penalty spot after Ruarie Griffin was upended in the box. Carryduff eventually got on the score sheet after some poor marking at a corner by rovers allowed their centre half to head home. Carryduff could be accused of the same shortcomings as Mcerlane scored his and Rovers fifth. U17 Rovers v St Marys (No report available) Harry Cavan Cup U18 Rovers 0 Crusaders 5 Rovers u18s were defeated in the IFA Harry Cavan cup today 5 nil by national league side crusaders. Rovers workrate was superb with Jordan heron saving a softly awarded penalty before the crues finally got a scrappy goal in first half injury time. Indeed, rovers tactics kept the young crues quiet for another 20 mins before they scored their second deflected goal. immense performances from all the antrim lads saw them tire and eventually crusaders showed their superior fitness and they ran in 3 in the last 10 mins. rovers only play 80 mins in their league and it caught up with them. Alvin Pierces lads never gave in and even when the victors increased their lead they battled on, inspired by the large turn out from the home support! Crawford Cup 1sts 1 Rathcoole FC 1 (AET 2-2, Rovers win 4-2 on penalties) This game had everything and demonstrated that every match needs every player to step up to the plate! A full blooded cup tie where no quarter was asked nor given saw neither team able to win in 90 mins and still nothing between them after a further round of extra time. Penalties decided it and cool finishing from the spot sees Rovers name go into the hat for the next round. Todays goal scorers: darryl brammeld 40mins, darren adair 17 mins et. Penalties darryl brammeld jonny rogers darryl mcneill ryan gallagher Rocky (Noel Rock) our keeper saved 2. And was deservedly named Moes Grill Motm.
