Results from a very recent study suggests that elevation of brain magnesium exerts significant synaptic protective effects in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease and may have therapeutic potential for treating the condition in humans. The form of magnesium used in the study was magnesium threonate, a unique form of magnesium that has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier better than other forms of magnesium. Magnesium is known to be a critical factor in development of synapse density and plasticity, important processes associated with learning and memory.
