Results of Recon Hunt. First, I want to thank Gene and his lovely wife Alice for the effort they put into getting this recon hunts set up. News, not as encouraging as I would have liked. We checked out two main sites we thought the camp could have been. First site, we hunted for two hours and then at end of day returned to it. Our objective was to find the Confederate Winter Camp. We found very little, but, in the back dug up some brass civil war rivots, and Gene found a nice colonial flat button. We were about to give up and I dug a civil war spur and the broken part. See photos attached for site 1. After finding the spur we focused on the area, and found nothing. Not one single civil war bullet. The site had a home that goes back 300 years we were told. Since this was a scouting hunt, we went across from the old pre civil war home that was the Crossroads, the Yankee Cavalry seized and the Confederate camp was near. It had a thick pine forest that they were thining out. With rains Sunday along with all the felled brush, was not too conducive for good hunting. We did see brick and old pottery on three different hill tops. But not one single civil war find or any good find for that matter. But again, the site was not conducive for hunting. And in the summer when vegetation grows back, will be impossible to hunt. I took pictures of the brick we were seeing on the three hill tops. If this was the camp do not understand why none of us had one good find to establish the camp. See pictures attached, for site 2. I looked at topo maps of site 1 after hunt and realize the broad level plateau continues much further into woods and to the creek. I am also wondering why would a yankee cavalryman lose a spur well behind the house that dates back 300 years and is on the main road? Report said they went back to destroy the confederate camp of log cabins after they chased the confederates off. I am wondering if the camp is further into the woods at back of field and closer to creek? Bottom line, while was nice to dig a spur, was disappointing we were not able to pinpoint the camp for a group hunt. There are two other sites it might be. But what we are chasing is the camp was near, the corner. so will continue to work with Gene and Alice to locate it and any who want to help understanding you may find very little. But wanted to give group first recon assessment. And again thank Gene and Alice for putting a lot of hard work into scouting and getting us permission to hunt. Photos attached relate to site 1 and 2.
