Retired Steelcase chairman and philanthropist Peter M. Wege dies at 94 Steelcase is remembering Peter M. Wege, son of one of our company’s founders. He will be best remembered not for what he did for Steelcase, but for what he did for the world around us. “Well before sustainability became a topic in most companies, Peter was the environmental conscience of Steelcase,” says CEO Jim Keane. “As an employee and as a member of our board of directors, Peter never wavered from that commitment to protect the planet.” Peter’s influence is present across West Michigan – through his generous donations to the arts, education and other causes. But in keeping with his passion for the environment, before Peter would help pay for a building, he would insist that it be LEED certified. Our hearts go out to the Wege family and all of those in our communities who have been helped by Peter’s generosity.
