Returning favorites and some new events will highlight this years Pumpkin Festival. Today, festival organizers Let it Shine Inc. and Sterling Design and Communications announced programming so far for the festival, which will be held on Oct. 18 from noon to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Keene. New this year will be a pumpkin dome designed by Ryan Ullrich, a 2013 Keene State College graduate, with assistance from engineer Ted Fellows and Steve Clark of Hamshaw Lumber, according to a news release from Let it Shine and Sterling Design and Communications. The dome, which will have a diameter of 25 feet, is expected to display about 200 jack-o-lanterns at the intersection of Main and Emerald streets. Festival organizers say theyre looking for a sponsor for the dome. Also new this year will be a photo-op with the pumpkin tower on Central Square in the background, according to the news release. The photos will be taken on a raised platform, and be available instantly for purchase at the not-too-inflated price of $15, the news release said. Events returning to the festival include the Great Pumpkin Mile, the Childrens Costume Parade, Pumpkin Bowling and the Pump(kin) Dump Derby, according to the news release. Keenes regaining of the world record last year for the most lit jack-o-lanterns in one place will be acknowledged during the festivals opening ceremonies at noon. Keene lost the world record to Boston in 2006. Welcome centers will be set up at each entrance to the festival for people to register their jack-o-lanterns, and the food and craft court will be open from noon-8:15 p.m. in the Commercial Street and Gilbo Avenue parking lots, according to the news release. The Ferris wheel on Main Street will also make a return, offering riders a view of the festival from 45 feet in the air.
