Rev. 4:6b AND IN THE MIDST OF THE THRONE, AND ROUND ABOUT THE THRONE, WERE FOUR BEASTS FULL OF EYES BEFORE AND BEHIND. - four beasts is more better translated as four living creatures in other Bible versions. who are they? from v6b-8 let us note their descriptions: 1. they are LIVING creatures. living is Gk. zwon meaning a living being, one vibrant with life. 2. therefore, they might be ANGELS who guard the throne of God. in Isa. 6:2-13 and Ezek. 1:5-28, they are also called seraphim and cherubim. some think they are the highest form and greatest of all heavenly beings God created. 3. they are FOUR in number. in Bible numerology, 4 is the number of the earth and man (like 4 divisions of the race [Rev. 7:9 nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues], four elements [fire, water, earth, air], 4 directions, 4 seasons, 4 universal empires [Dan. 7]). therefore, together the 4 living creatures represent Gods judicial government and activities over man. they express the character of Gods throne in relation to the earth and man. 4. they are FULL OF EYES, meaning their wisdom is overwhelming. (eyes symbolize wisdom). the cherubim in Ezek. 10 were also full of eyes, signifying their intelligence and their constant observance and knowledge of the affairs of the earth in behalf of the Almighty, and their spiritual perception of Gods purposes and acts. and they can see everything in every direction. 5. they have SIX WINGS, reminding us of the seraphim of Isa. 6. this depict their quickness and availability in service to the One sitting on the throne. 6. like the cherubim of Ezek. 1:10 and 10:14, they are seen in 4 representations: like a lion, an ox, a man, and an eagle. 7. finally in v8, they are seen worshiping and praising God nonstop 24/7. there is not weakness or imperfection in their worship or service to God, proclaiming His perfect holiness.
