Revelation1:4 talks about God as the one who is, who was, and who is to come. There are two very unique ways this statement is formed. First, the present the one who is is before the past designation that often comes first in spanning the idea of the Timeless One. John is wanting his readers to know that the great I AM is totally unique from all other gods. He stands in the midst of time not just over it! He stands in the middle of all we face, not just as a God who heals our past or promises our future but supports us in the present! He is the God who is sovereignly living in our midst no matter how chaotic the present seems to be! The second thing that is unique about Gods self-designation is not One who simply will be but one who has promised to fully come to establish himself completely in human history so that we can be assured that he includes us in his future, glorious plans! Indeed, God sees saved, redeemed humanity as integral to all that He is and all we will ever hope or dream to be is wrapped up in who He is!
