Revenge? My seven year old grandson Anirudh told his father (my son), when they were visited London that he wanted to go to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen. When asked why, he said he wanted to plant the tricolor on her table and just stare at her! He had been quite upset over the stories of British atrocities in India. S/Lt. Kamath and I felt the same way on 16th September 1959, our first day in London. We had come up the escalator at Piccadilly tube station and were walking towards Jermyn Street to INA (London)’s office. We saw shoe shine boys (grown up men) operating on the pavement. We had to have our (already clean) shoes polished again by them. We felt great. Imagine the two of us having our shoes polished by Englishmen in broad daylight in London’s main thoroughfare. It was childish. We really felt that we had in some measure avenged three hundred years of indignities the British had heaped on Indians.
