Revenue Collection In LGA Is Legal – Omagbon OKADA – The Chairman, Ovia North East Local Government Council, Barr (Mrs) Lucy Omagbon has said that there is no going back on the implementation of government bye-law on revenue collection (business tax) in the area, insisting that money is the life wire of every administration. The council boss made this position known yesterday while addressing some traders who protested to the council secretariat at Okada, demanding tax relief. Barrister Omagbon disclosed that the council authority has been fair enough in its approach to issues, including methods of collecting revenue from business in the area. Omagbon who educated the protesting traders on the issue, maintained that the traders were charged according to their taxable capacity. According to her, with fair assessment, many of the traders would end up paying more than what has been estimated for them to pay as business tax, which she said is not a burden. The council chairman who charged the traders to cooperate with government, re-affirmed her commitment to making life better for the people of the area. She however advised the traders and youths of the area not to allow themselves to be used by her political opponents against her administration adding that tax evasion amounts to economic sabotage. Meanwhile, the need for sensitization and re-orientation of traders (businessmen) on taxation has been advocated by one of the council’s coordinators of revenue collection, Mr. Edobor Osaretin. Mr. Edobor said that though traders in his UNIBEN-Oluku Zone of the local government area have been cooperating well with him, he insisted that there is need to properly educate them so that they do not continue to see revenue collectors as their enemies. He advised the protesting traders of Okada Community to embrace the council’s method of revenue collection which is done once a year, without anyone harassing them on a daily basis.
