Review #288: Quatermass and The Pit (1967) Bernard Quatermass third outing with Hammer proves to be an improvement over Quatermass 2, while not outshining Xperiment. While remaining faithful to Nigel Kneales telly-serial, Quatermass and The Pit suffers from a lack of surprise and building terror its small-screen counterpart did so well (the discovery of the ships interior is simply not as scary as before). One mild improvement is the recasting of Quatermass himself. While the Sean Connery-esque Andrew Keir may not be the ideal build for old Bernie, his British roots make the character far less alienating than Brian Donlevys American incarnation. One large fault is Quatermass lack of importance throughout the film. He merely shows up from time to time as an observer, making little impact on any of the films events. Nevertheless, while a fairly average adaptation, Quatermass and The Pit is still a solid sci-fi film from Hammer, being a thrilling ride, whilst also quite thought-provoking. VERDICT: 3/5
