******Review****** Dawn of the planet of the Apes. Starring: Jason Clarke, Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman and Kerri Russell Matt Reeves directs Story: Simian flu (the product of a scientific experiment into curing alzheimers) has killed off most of the worlds human population and made our cousins extremely intelligent. Visuals - The first few minutes your mind adjusts to how the Apes look as it is a little obvious they are CG. After that however, you forget what you are watching and get completely absorbed into the Ape world. The visuals go from strength to strength there on in. The sets are amazing and the effort made to shoot in tough locations for the sake of realism certainly paid off. Plot: After having not seen humans for 10 years, the Apes assume they are extinct until one day their paths meet. Tension between the two societies raises with those wishing for peace and war on both sides. The story has been seen a lot before but the execution of the story is its greatest strength. With painful (and often stupid) mistakes being made on both sides, at least this time they dont feel forced for plot beats. Characters - Great characters. Well written and well acted. Matt Reeves even gets the audience rooting for the Apes. Female characters are under played. With little for them to do I feel they have yet again been marginalised. Overall - A very well executed piece. Very impressed and can not wait for the third installment. 8/10
