Review Just In: Bonnie Mac Band at Newark Blues Festival One of the unexpected highlights of the entire festival for me was catching up with the Bonnie Mac Band at The Fox & Crown. I have to confess I missed the start of the set but as I approached the venue my pace quickened, drawn by the sound of classic Chicago-style blues drawing me in. Singer Sheila Mac has a voice made for blues, at home on the raunchy driving blues numbers but also able to convey emotion and warmth on the slower tunes. Little wonder she was a recent Blues Hall of Fame Award winner. The band absolutely hit the spot with the choice and execution of covers like Further On Up The Road, Waitin’ By Myself and a stunning Roadrunner. Slower numbers like Little By Little and Sweet Little Angel are breathtaking. When Sheila is joined by Rhythm Zoo front woman Andi Hall for Roadhouse Blues we’re all in blues heaven. This is no mere covers band though, new single The Flood shows a craft and subtlety at work that suggests the debut album due in the new year will be a must buy. John Sharp and Craig Jackson on drums and bass are locked in throughout allowing guitarist Geoff Waddington to swoop and soar at will whilst Ian Scaife on harp drips blues onto every track. Catch this band live at any opportunity, highly recommended and a great night guaranteed. Steve Yourglivch.
