Review: MC mod Id been reading a lot about the MC mod over the last year, and wanting to do it. The claim is a 10% gain in HP across most of the RPM range just by advancing the exhaust cam 1 tooth. FREE POWER :) Everything Ive read says this works on the 08+ models due to emissions changes, and is of little or no benefit to the gen 1s. Since I had a maintenance day planned, I decided to go ahead and get this done. Im not going to try to tell you how to do it in full... it really is just removing the valve cover, removing the timing chain tenshioner, unbolting the exhaust cam, rotating it a tooth, and putting it all back together. You need to use your shop manual for the details, as theres more involved, but those are the basic steps. I made this mod at the same time as I did a few other minor tweaks. Re-jetted with a KLX needle and main instead of the 22 cent mod, and installed an AIS blockoff kit. Neither of those should have made any huge difference in the running of the bike, although I do try to avoid changing more than 1 thing at a time. All I can say is WOW! Run, dont walk, out to your shop and make this change on your gen 2. It really made the engine come alive. Granted, 2-3 hp isnt going to make it a rocket ship, but it did do something amazing. It smoothed the engine out significantly, and gave it a smooth pull through to redline with reduced hesitation or resistance. So whats the downside? I think it may have lost just a little under 2500 rpm, but thumpers arent too happy there anyway. Also, I always go through a week or so of worrying I may have done something wrong when I go into engine internals. I start hearing and feeling ghosts. In this case, thats all they were. The more I live with it, the more I love it. By far, the best power change Ive made on this bike. Rating 9.5/10 (Thats three high ratings in one day! very rare for me, as Im very critical) No picture, so Ill just show one of the bike :)
