Review: “Shet Happens” by NE3 Folk Shet happens …but in the most delightful way! NE3 folk is a folk trio based in Folk City (my term) Newcastle upon Tyne, as NE3 Folk have emerged like a beautiful butterfly from the chrysalis of the Folk degree course as have many other acts at Newcastle University. NE3 as I shall refer to them are not a musical postcode, but fiddler Catherine Geldard (from Shetland), Chris Meredith (from somewhere in Scotland but not Shetland) on guitar, and Victoria Laurenson on accordion (also from Shetland). It will be a relief to hear that “Shet” and its cousin, a word with a similar format (but too vulgar for this Review!) have nothing in coming as this EP is very good! All the tracks are instrumental and appear to have been recorded in an intimate live session. Its clear that NE3 really enjoyed the session as it is played with evident passion, conviction, energy and a clean crisp sound full of personality. I listened to this EP (generous at 6 tracks) several times on the way to work and it really reminds me of the driving dynamic folk played another North East folk trio Hexham based Tyde… and I love them so that’s good! I also felt that at times some of the tunes had great complexity with layers of sound and an occasional minimalist feel which along with some more trad. tunes felt very much like the highly acclaimed trio LAU. NE3 pack a lot in to engage the listener in each track, “The Duck”, the opener being a good example. Lots of twists and turns, changes of tunes, pace , texture, atmosphere but never did it feel choppy and disjointed as NE3 melded their musical brew together well . Anyway, an enjoyable debut which leaves this folk fan wanting more…when’s the full album out NE3?
