Review of Equalizer by Nick Smith: ★★★☆☆ Being a fan of Edward Woodwards Equalizer, I was very skeptical about this movie. I actually wasnt planning on going to see it and yet I found myself in the cinema yesterday watching it and unexpectedly enjoying it. With a very similar premise to the TV show, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is haunted by sins he committed in the past while working for a government agency (C.I.A. more than likely). At the start of the movie he is living a very simple life until he witnesses the abuse of a young acquaintance of his by the Russian mafia. This obviously awakens McCalls killer instinct and he knows its time to go to work. Cue the knives, guns, blood, etc. Obviously I tried to totally keep the TV show out of my head while watching otherwise it just wouldnt be fair to the movie; however, as the film progressed Denzels Robert McCall started to show some of the traits that Edward Woodwards McCall brought to our screens in the 80s. Like Woodward, Denzels McCall was very skilled with weaponry and military precision tactics. He was also cool under pressure and always 2 steps ahead of his opponents, with a way out of every situation. In terms of acting there wasnt really any stand out performances. This character is basically a walk in the park for Denzel. Chloe Grace Moretz was hardly in the movie. Her character was basically the catalyst to McCalls new hunger stop injustice and equalize the odds for the innocent. Overall The Equalizer is quite a decent action/thriller and definitely worth a watch. A warning to those who arent fans of gore as there are some very brutal death scenes in this movie. youtu.be/VjctHUEmutw
