Review of Mikkellers Monks Brew (Bourbon Barrel Aged) by Derrik Battaglia A precariously amorous brew, something that can be shared with your arch nemesis before their demise, or with your lover post coital. Brought to us by famed gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø based out of Copenhagen, Denmark. This version of the Monks Brew is something to be paid attention to. It takes many shades during the experience, and thrives on its subtle features and big flavors that are stored away in the bottle. It pours a murky auburn copper color With a sweet nose of roasted caramel, chocolate and dark fruits, we are on our way. The head, smooth, like a fine cappuccino. On the tongue we get to the fun bits. Brandy cherries, burnt sugar, figs and the souls of innocent men. This, all joined by a very intimate mouth feel. In my opinion, an almost perfectly complimenting mouth feel to its tricky hidden flavors. This is the secret to the beers rich complexity. When we let it sit for a while, chocolate, oak and the long lasting bourbon finish begin to show up as the dark fruits begin to fade away. This would pair nicely with our cheesecake for dessert. Also, if you have had this brew before, other things that may interest you would be Midnight Suns Monk Mistress, Alesmiths Decadance 2012 and a lighter option, the De Dolle Oerbier from Brouwerij De Dolle Brouwers.
