Somebody else’ mates jiggling across the frame in that “oh ive got that app” kinda way. Fun factor seven. Its Date, with a video that cuts close to dull, salvaged by rampant cut scenes in the chorus and a rather lovely dog in a basket. Edgy. Its Brighton*, **, ***. The Arcade. The beach. The “I wish I was that cool” ice cream smile of Alex Howe. Dates his brain child, and as the myth suggests, in the flesh he’s actually pretty cool, charming and down to earth. A dreamy eyed space cadet hopeful with a catalogue of ditties waiting for the radio. (*it could be brighton ** it could be someone else’ drive ***we know stealing stones is big business) The record is sound. It’s got the voice, the triumphant chorus and a guitar intro that ‘bin nin neeeeews’ at you. That’s the hook. Pop. Class production. Sparkle from a mile off. The guys know what they’re doing. Lyrically its not breaking any doors down. Your safe, your girlfriend might not be. Its not the resounding death rattle of a lost generation, its a nostalgic embrace plodding the 90’s pop path. Like Smashing Pumpkins with more hair and less growl. Echoes in a cave you know how it goes. The videos bashed out by YOUTH HYMNS. Theyve done some fantastic green screen electro trip with ZIBRA. Usually they’ve got that Guest Of Cindy Sherman vibe, old school diy aesthetic. Look it up. Technology before ya phone took acid and appd you out. I heard they use 90mm. Medieval art house. Though you wouldn’t have thought it looking at this video. Having evidenced Dates live show it’s starting to gain weight. Its taken a few line up changes to lock the band in but now they look like they belong. Another flurry of song writing, a bit more growth, maybe chew off some of the song fat and these guys will be on your door step* cooing in your ear, seeping through the radio and have you reliving summer all over again.
