Review of the S&W 625 The 625 is a double action / single action - TopicsExpress

Review of the S&W 625 The 625 is a double action / single action revolver built on the large N frame, is chambered for 45 ACP, and weighs in around 41 ounces. Shot capacity is available in 6 or 7 shots. The 625 was first introduced in1988 as a special edition intended for use in International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). Regular production began in 1989 and the gun was offered in 3” and 4” barrel lengths. However, today Smith and Wesson only offer 4” and 5” barrels. The gun owned by my good friend and shooting partner, Big Dan, is a special “JM” edition. JM stands for Jerry Miculek who is considered by many to be the best revolver competition shooter ever. He shoots a 625 much of the time. Dan has taken 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sanded all of the sharp edges on the gun which makes it easier to handle. The trigger on the gun is nicknamed the ‘DNA trigger” because of the 5 grooves which run the length of the trigger. When shooting fast, these grooves will cause a skin to be rubbed off, but a little wet sanding takes care of the problem. Dan is also a very competent pistol smith and has worked and lovingly massaged the trigger to be smooth and produce a predictable 7.5lb break in double action. Ditched are the hard wood grips, and installed is a set of $25 Hogue molded rubber grips. The rubber grip helps with recoil management and in my opinion allows a better overall purchase on the gun. Also, the front sight has been changed from the red fiber optic to a gold bead. The gold bead sight really magnifies ambient light better than a fiber optic does in low light situations. It is an upgrade worth the money I must say. Holster options are plentiful as well. Leather, Kydex or Nylon selection will snuggly secure the gun to your hip for safe carry. A good heavy duty gun belt will be necessary to carry the gun to eliminate sag of the holster. A good belt also helps to better distribute the weight of the gun better than a cheaply made belt does. The gun has demonstrated it will shoot any 45 ACP ammunition you feed it. And since it is chambered for the popular 45 Auto round, a wide variety of weights and loads are available to you as well. The weight of the gun is not overwhelming and works to the shooters advantage by helping to dissipate energy generated from each shot also called recoil. It is pleasant to shoot and I would recommend it to anyone looking to invest in a dependable large frame revolver. Here is more info on this fine handgun. https://youtube/watch?v=hHEziP0rTZ0
